Direct Answer

What is the difference between a certification and a license?

A license is issued by a state government and legally required to practice. A certification is awarded by a professional body, federally mandatory (EPA 608, HAZWOPER), employer-required (OSHA 30, NCCCO), or industry-valued (PMP, Six Sigma). Both affect hiring and salary; neither replaces the other.

Federally mandatory, required by federal law or regulation (EPA, OSHA, DOT). Working without it is illegal and carries fines.

Employer-required, not legally mandated but required by most employers in the industry before hire.

Industry-valued, preferred for advancement, pay raises, and competitive roles but not a hard hiring requirement.

FAQ

Certification FAQ

Which certifications increase salary the most?

By annual salary impact: Master Electrician licence +$30,200/yr · PMP +$20,000+/yr · NICET Level III +$14,000/yr · Electrical Foreman cert +$11,500/yr · EPA 608 Universal +$8,000–$12,000/yr · OSHA 30 +$5,600/yr. ROI on most certs is under 4 months at the resulting pay increase.

Is OSHA 30 really required by employers?

OSHA 30 is not federally mandated but is required by most commercial and industrial contractors, and by New York City law on certain projects. It signals safety awareness and is a near-universal requirement for foreman and superintendent roles. Without it, you will be filtered out of most EPC and large commercial bids.

Do certifications expire?

It depends on the certification. OSHA 30 has no federal expiry, but many employers enforce a 5-year internal recency policy. EPA 608 does not expire once earned. NCCCO crane certifications expire every 5 years. PMP requires 60 PDUs every 3 years. Each cert guide lists the exact renewal requirements and timeline.

Can I get certified online?

Some certifications allow fully online completion, OSHA 30 is available online through DOL-authorised providers. EPA 608 has an online proctored exam option. NCCCO and AWS CWI require in-person practical components. PMP is available via online proctored exam. Each guide specifies which delivery formats are accepted by the issuing body.

Does GlobalCybers cover certification fees?

Yes. Every professional placed through GlobalCybers has their exam fee, renewal cost, and any required CE hours covered post-placement. This includes OSHA 30, EPA 608, NCCCO, AWS CWI, NICET, PMP, and all 75 certifications in our guide. No upfront cost to the professional, reimbursement is confirmed after successful placement.

What is the fastest certification to get?

OSHA 10 can be completed online in 10 hours. EPA 608 Type I/II exams can be passed in a day with preparation. BLS/CPR and First Aid take 4–8 hours. OSHA 30 takes 30 classroom hours (3–4 days online). Forklift certification is 1 day. The fastest high-impact cert for trades and construction workers is OSHA 30, completed in a week or less.
